The lot size required for a geothermal system in Alberta depends entirely on the type of ground loop configuration you choose. There are two primary options based on land availability:

  • Vertical Loops: These are ideal for smaller urban lots. Because they are drilled deep into the ground (between 100 to 400 feet), they require minimal land surface area.
  • Horizontal Loops: These are better suited for suburban or rural properties with more space. This configuration requires approximately one-quarter to one-half acre of land because the loops are installed in trenches 4 to 6 feet deep.

For properties with access to a sufficient body of water, a pond or lake loop may also be an option, though these are rare in the Calgary area. A professional site assessment is recommended to evaluate your property’s soil composition and square footage to determine which system is the best fit.
